The problem is, that most searchers only look at the images not at the websites where they come from. They only use your traffic but you have no roi.

Your suggestion of blocking images from robots is good using the robot.txt but typically most images are just put in the image directory (it would take longer to code a page with 2 different image directories). An alternative might be - say you are concerned with a privacy issue with a picture of a child - in that case you might want to name the image with a number 1234.jpg rather than use marie.jpg. Also if you have an image you have spent a lot of money on e.g. an illustrated heart, you might not want to name it heart.jpg because it will come up on the Google images for a "heart" search and it is too easy for people to save and reuse these images. Lots of people still think it's perfectly legal to do this.

I have a blog with a plugin that automatically adds alt text to the image that I place in my posts. Although I can override the alt text placed by the plugin, it usually includes the name of my post on the image. Is that a good thing or should I just name the image for what it is?

Search engines can clearly see from the use of the IMG tag and filetype that something is an image, and I cannot even remotely imagine adding that to the filename to get better indexation in the image search engines!
regards,
Grahm

Now I understand why everybody talks about having good sources of images. With this points is logical to think that images also play an important role in having quality content in some blogs.

What can be done there is more of a surgical approach... open up the access to spiders on just one of the thumbnail or medium sized images, but keep them out of the full-sized images.

The blocking of the non-content images is a really cool idea that I had never heard of before. I'm going to give that a try.
